CWSRG Observation of Unity Exercise 2024

St Lucia, April 2024

In April 2024 the Commonwealth Security & Resilience Group was invited to be an official observer of the Regional Security System (RSS) exercise in St Lucia, alongside officials from EU, US and Canada.

Unity Exercise was the largest Regional Security System exercise for over 15 years and tested regional capability in responding to complex and varied threats. Unity Exercise was set against the context of an unprecedented concentration and influx of visitors as part of the 2024 T20 Cricket World Cup, the final of which was to be held in Barbados.

As an enduring partner of the RSS, CWSRG was delighted to be invited and for regional Director, Kirk Harris, to attend proceedings and observe first hand the professionalism and dedication of RSS Headquarters and troops in training. CWSRG were also pleased to support the exercise through the demonstration of common operating picture technology, showcasing the uplift in capability that can be achieved through new tech solutions. This demonstration of capability afforded the service provider, global donor bodies, and regional security leaders a unique opportunity to engage with a new solution and explore future agreements.

The RSS brings together eight Commonwealth member states, seven of whom are Small Island Developing States. Unity Exercise showcased what can be achieved through regional and international security architecture and frameworks for cooperation. The RSS remains a best practice example of interoperability and we are delighted to bring their work to the attention of the Commonwealth community, while at the same time, explore new opportunities for the wider Commonwealth to support the RSS in their efforts to deliver regional security leadership.
